How Willy Got His Wheels

A life lesson for all of us
I read the book after hearing about it on tv, and have sent it to my great nieces. You see I am like Willy I am also in a wheelchair. I have never gotten to see my great-nieces in person and hope that when they reed the book and their mom explains to them that I am (like Willy) in a wheelchair that they cn understand why I haven't been able to come see them (they are in Oregon and I am in Missouri). Willy is a courageous pup and we can all learn from him how to face life's adversities.

Not sappy, just truly inspirational - in the best way!
I find that the best inspirational tales come from real life - and this book is no exception. I saw the owner of Willy (yes, there actually is a real Willy) on Animal Planet and knew I just had to buy the book. It is as charming as expected and not just because of spunky little Willy, whose back legs are paralyzed and who has to learn to "walk" again, with the help of a special wheel-cart. It is just as inspiring to read of his owner's attempts to find a way to get him walking - using everything from acupuncture to helium balloons to hold up the back legs. A great read for the entire family!

A story of love & courage for all ages
Willy the Chihuahua lives at an animal hospital, because his back legs don't work. He dreams of having a home and a family and playing with other animals and chasing sticks. Then one day, a pretty lady comes and takes him home with her! Willy meets his new brother, another Chihuahua named Sweet Pea, and his new sister, a fluffy silver cat named Marshmallow.

Willy still can't walk or run, and has to use his front legs to drag himself from place to place, until his new mother tries some different ideas to help him get around--with often humorous results.

Filled with bright, gorgeous watercolor illustrations that even pre-readers can appreciate, HOW WILLY GOT HIS WHEELS is the story of a loveable and courageous little dog. Written for age levels 5-10, it's a book that everyone from toddlers to adults can enjoy on many levels. Authors Turner and Mohler have done a tremendous job of showing life from a physically disabled viewpoint without preaching or patronizing. Here's hoping we will get to hear more of Willy's adventures in the near future!

Must have
No LA fan could be without this book. The bio part is excellent and gives another dimensions to the artist we love, the photos are great (Laurie with long hair!) and it has lyrics for hard-to-find songs.
I would have been a little bit more happy (and given 8 stars) if EVERY lyric, poem or shopping list Laurie wrote was here, but, well, I am asking too much.
Spend your money here, you won-t be dissapointed.

good job Roselee and Laurie
If it says Laurie Anderson on it I'll probably buy it. This is just another example of the great work they both work towards and accomplish.. If i may digress, the first time I heard Laurie was at a party before Big Science was released. Rick Wakeman (YES) was the guest DJ at the radio station..Talk about a brick wall ! the party came to a complete standstill during O Superman. I swear nobody said a word except for wow! As far as this book goes..yeah get it before it gets hard to find..United States is hard to find now, and its a great companion to United States Live (the CD)

Highly recommended reading for all Laurie Anderson fans.
Blend a social history with a fine survey of complete panoramas and you have an elegant, sophisticated presentation. Roselee Goldberg's Laurie Anderson covers the works of the multi-media performance artist/pop star, moving beyond her rock image to establish her skills in art and performance pieces alike.

The 2nd best book in the world (after the Bible of course)
I absolutely love this book. It is definitely the best book I own besides the Bible. I found my dad's 1982 edition and it is very awesome. Pretty much any song that I'd ever want to play (before 1982) is in there. And I'm pretty sure that this one for sale is a newer edition, so it'd have more recent songs. It has everything from oldies, to hymns, to pop songs, and folk songs. I taught myself to play guitar off the chord chart in the back. The bottom line is that this book is essential to anyone who is a guitarist, or just likes to sing. If I could own only two books, it would be the Bible and "Songs." Do not go another day without it! I plan to buy another since I use it so much and don't want to ruin my dad's copy.

Songs
This is THE best book for sing-alongs, church services, and camps. It has an amazing range of songs: Beatles, oldies (Bicycle Built for Two, etc.) rounds, Christmas, and on and on. We've even used it to entertain at a nursing home a few times - they loved it!
Be aware that one version just has guitar chords. Another one (Tune Book) also has notes for most of the songs.

Most Useful Song Book I Own
I've owned and used editions of this song book since 1987. I learned to play guitar using this book. I've loaned it and recommended it to everyone learning to play guitar and lead music. Familiar songs, a WIDE variety of song styles, chord chart in the back. You're guaranteed to find songs you know, songs you love and songs you remember as well a number of new ones!

Night Sounds

Author: Beth Anderson

Night Sounds Delivers
A haunting mystery set in the world of jazz. Ms. Anderson weaves a well-crafted tale of murder and lust. You can hear the sax moaning in the night. Night Sounds hits all the right notes.

Beth Anderson is on her way. And she isn't slowing down.
Joe Barbarello has one goal in life. Nothing else matters to him except to get a record deal. He, and his jazz band, are good, and they know it. A record deal is in sight, and that is all that matters to Joe, and to the rest of the band. They are completely focused on that one end, the record deal.

But then Joe meets Zoey Bauer. The sexist woman he has ever seen in his life. Now he has problems. Problems that he never asked for, and doesn't want. But he does want Zoey. He can't stay away from her.

It seems the day before Joe met Zoey, she had woken up, that morning, to find her boyfriend, Jay Da Volo, laying stabbed to death next to her in bed. She swears that she has no idea what happened. But the police, and everyone else, believe differently. Everyone, that is except Joe. He believes her.

Now it seems that the police even think that Joe may have actually been the one that killed Jay. Or at least helped Zoey kill him. And they will not give up until they prove it.

It looks like the only thing that Joe can do, now, is find out who really killed Jay. Because he knows, or thinks he knows, that Zoey couldn't have. And he definitely knows he had absolutely nothing to do with it.

But it looks like the police, his mother, and even his band members want him to leave it alone. Just let the police handle it. Better yet, dump Zoey. Joe just can't do that, if he doesn't find the real killer both he, and Zoey, will go down for the killing. A murder that he knows they are both innocent of.

Ms. Anderson has done it again. She has come up with another winner. She takes you on a sexy roller coaster ride that you don't want to get off.

Night Sounds will amuse you, make you laugh, make you cry, surprise you, shock you, and make you angry. The characters are both aggravating, and at the same time lovable. Amusing, and yet maddening. The story is fast paced, and holds your attention. You won't be able to put it down until you have read that last word.

I recommend that everyone pick up a copy of Night Sounds, and get ready for the best time of your life. Because Beth Anderson takes you for a ride you won't soon forget. All I can add to this, is, look out Jackie Collins, Beth Anderson is on her way. And she isn't slowing down.

Beth Anderson has done herself proud with Night Sounds!
Joe Barbarello, a jazz pianist, is shooting for just one thing in life. And that's a record deal. When he meets Zoey Bauer, one of the sexiest women he's ever met, his life and priorities get turned upside down, and nothing is ever the same for him again. Now, instead of shooting for a record deal, Joe is trying to prove his innocence to the police. They want to charge him with the shooting of Zoey's boyfriend, and the only deal they want to give him is a guilty verdict, and a nice long sentence in prison. Now it's up to Joe to prove his innocence by finding the real killer. No one believes that Zoey could be innocent. The police, his mother, and his friends all want him to get away from her. Occasionally even Joe has his doubts about her. But as hard as he tries he can't stay away from Zoey. So, it's up to him to prove them both innocent. Even though he's not one hundred percent sure she is. Beth Anderson has written a fantastic mystery. Each page leads you in a different direction and is cleverly intertwined. In the midst of the devastation that is now Joe's life, Ms. Anderson will lighten the scene with Joe's overprotective, and know it all, mother. I found her character hilarious and so entertaining. I could have read a whole book just about her. You will not figure out this killer! No way! Night Sounds will definitely keep you guessing till Ms. Anderson decides to tell you just who it is. I found the entire story gripping and exciting. The surprising twist at the end of the book is so startling that you'll catch your breath in surprise! Beth Anderson has done herself proud with Night Sounds!

Why Good Coaches Quit--And How You Can Stay in the Game
Published in Paperback by Fairview Pr (01 September, 1999)
Authors: John Anderson and Rick A. Aberman
Average review score:

It's Really About Being A Great Leader!
As a leader in a corporate environment, I found the book inspiring. It explains how important working with 'emotional intelligence' is for yourself and those around you. Whether you are a coach, a parent, an athlete, or a leader such as myself, you are always dealing with more than what you 'signed up for'. Figuring out "The Other Stuff", is critical for success.

Important for All Parents
If you have kids and they play sports, you've got to read this book. Sports appear to be the 'best' way to help develop strong, intelligent, independent kids. But sports become complicated and messy when parents get too involved. This is a great book to help give any parent the insight and perspective they need to help themselves and their kids, whether they coach or not. Enjoy!

A Must Read for Every Parent
An interesting and dynamic book. A must read for every parent especially as their kids get more and more involved in all kinds of sports. Understanding what is right for the parent and what is right for the kid is critical for overall success and happiness.

Mama's Bank Account
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (June, 1949)

A tale of a remarkable woman
As an author, I bought this book to use as a reference book while writing a fictional story about a similar type of family. I read this book as a young woman and saw both the stage play and the movie. It is a touching tale of a more simple time and a remarkable woman. Rosalie Kramer, "Dancing in the Dark: Things My Mother Never Told Me."

Way Back When
When I read this book I could go back to many years ago when most of the women in those days were just like Mama.Their concern, love, understanding, wisdom, wit, creative and hard work that they endured have made this country what it is today. If only we could instill some of these values in our people today what a difference it would make. This is a wonderful read and so glad that I could read a down to earth book like Mama's Bank Account'

A Neglected Literary Gem
I first read this novel in 1946 as a freshman in high school. The author's son was a sophomore in the same school. Dick was enormously popular, class president, a natural athlete, gifted amateur actor, public speaker and writer. Certainly a remarkable lad in his own right. (In 1947, having dropped a water bomb on one of the faculty, I knew my days were numbered and changed schools. Never ran into Dick again. So this is not a review written by a friend). That said, it was only de rigueur to read a book written by a classmate's mother.

The story line has been described by other reviewers, and their comments are right on target. One thing I might add is that Kathryn Forbes enjoyed a widespread national celebrity in the late forties, particularly after the Hollywood film was released. The story was also adapted for theater and, later, television. Sadly, celebrity is a perishable commodity.

I picked up this book and read it again last year. As a published novelist, I read it on this occasion with a very critical eye. It is as fresh as it was more than half a century ago. Not a great novel in the Faulknerian sense, but certainly a small classic. It is a charming work of great originality. Anyone interested in becoming a writer would do well to study it. See how beautifully Kathryn Forbes blends the theme and story line. Check out the clever characterization, and the simplicity of her writing style (never pretentious). This book is truly a little gem of its genre.

Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (February, 2002)
Authors: Dick Beardsley and Maureen Anderson
Average review score:

A wonderful read!
I started running ~ 2 yrs ago. My wife got me the book, but I hadn't heard of Dick so the book sat. One evening I picked it up to see what it was all about and I was instantly and uncontrollably sucked in. Dick's story starts in HS where he went out for the football team, which lasted a few minutes. Then a friend suggested XC, and Dick fell in love with what turned out to be his calling -- running.

The story refers to 5/10K events, and explains how Dick got into Marathons (a whim). It then follows the course of the multitude of Marathons he ran in.

Dick had his battles in life too, as we all do, a theme that repeated itself. Dick had some very tough times, but in the end he prevailed. Big time!

My friend Mat just got back from Boston Marathon '03; Mat brought back an autograph from Dick for me. Having read his book, and knowing what a great guy Dick is, this will be treasured for years to come.

Net, net, it's a must read.

Rex

Great fast read, but missing some points.
This book is an entertaining fast read. However, certain details in Beardsley's life are strangely glossed over: Alcoholic parents/meeting his wife. The first hand account of the (famous) 82'Boston Marathon is so stunning and awsome, it leaves the rest of the book dangling.

Inspiration at any level.
This is a book for any running aficionado (especially the veterans), who has gone out there and run distance. It's also a great story and inspiration for anybody who has run a marathon and in particular Boston. The mass start in Hopkinton, the crowds, the cheers at Wellesley, Heartbreak Hill in Newtown, coming through the Fenway, and on to the finish at the Boston Public Library. The 1982 race was perhaps the best one ever run and Beardley took us back there in the first person. Beardley takes any runner to the soul of this sometimes underappreciated sport. Spectacular!

No Time to Die: A Mali Anderson Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (18 May, 1999)
Author: Grace F. Edwards
Average review score:

"No Time To Die"
After reading "No Time to Die" I was not too impressed because I found the story line pretty predictable. Although, over all it was a good book. I enjoyed reading it even though it was predictable because it was interesting, the way the writer wrote the book and the way one thing led to another kept me interested. There was a loose killer in the Harlem streets and Mali's best friend was the first to be murdered. So, because Mali was on this particular case she was very intent and determined to find the murderer. Although, I don't think she realized that while she had intent to find the murderer, the murderer also intended to find her.

A touch of Harlem History
In the 3rd Mali Anderson books, the author goes for the suspense route instead of the mystery. We know who the killer is, now we just have to figure out why and when will he strike again and who will be his next victim. The author did a great job with the transistion from mystery to suspense, A serial killer in Harlem. As always, the reader is treated to Harlem history, landscape and nightlife. If you have never been to Harlem, you will feel like you just visited there after reading one of Grace's books. THis was an intriguing novel. I look forward to the next one.

Just Delighted
Once again, Grace Edwards has delighted her readers with the intelligence and tenacity of Mali Anderson. The characters are keenly developed and the "plot thickened" with every page. Unlike the other perpertrators, in the Mali Anderson series, we are introduced to this sinister evil, early on. As a person very interested in the social sciences, I found myself wanting to help "Ache" and hoped he would find redemption before destruction.

Ramayana: India's Immortal Tale of Adventure, Love and Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Torchlight Publishing (April, 1998)
Authors: Kenneth Anderson, Valmiki Ramayana, and Krishna
Average review score:

A very famous story but...
I read this book with great interest. Certainly the story of Rama's tale is exciting and one that is recounted many time in the East. However, in reading the story, one thing kept getting in the way: the book keeps praising the virtues of Brahmins non-stop. After a while, this ceaseless glorification of Brahmins became extremely annoying, at least for a non-Indian like me. I am speculating here but the story of Ramayana probably had a big influence in the way the caste system in India evolve through the centuries.

Retelling of a Classic Work of World Literature
Krishna Dharma's retelling of the Ramayana excels at conveying the greatness of this ancient story. The battles in the story are larger-than-life, the emotions intense.

I was put off a little by Rama's behavior from time to time, especially when you consider who he really is. The outcome of the story was utterly obvious from the moment we become aware of Rama's true identity; however, the twist in the story that occurs near the end caught me off guard.

There are other versions of the Ramayana that I've recently become aware of. One portrays the villain, Ravana, as the real hero; if this were one of Homer's poems, Ravana could definitely qualify as a great hero.

I highly recommend Krishna Dharma's retelling. He knows the story well enough, and is creative enough a writer, to fully convey all the messages and emotions the Ramayana attempts to send your way. The artwork is also very beautiful.

The Heartbreak of the King
Rama is the most perfect of King Dasarath's sons. He is wise and kind, devout, respectful, and a fearsome warrior. In the course of his youthful exploits he has fallen in love with Sita, who he now brings back in triumph to his father's city of Ayodhya. But, on the very day he is to be named Dasarath's heir, treachery takes place. Banished from Ajodhya by the machinations of one of Dasarath's jealous wives, Rama and Sita undertake an unconceivable adventure to rid the world of evil and return to Rama what is rightfully his.

And so begins one of the oldest and most spectacular adventures in literary history. Perhaps the oldest Indian epic, 'The Ramayana' is a grand story, a cautionary tale, and a vivid picture of the Vedic culture of one of the world's larger countries. This story, like told in 'The Mahabharata,' is deeply embedded in Indian culture. The tales display many of the key beliefs that have shaped Indian thought for centuries. For a student of the area, searching for common threads, they are required reading. For many this is still a text of religious importance. As Dharma quotes, "This legend is the bestower of longevity, the enhancer of fortune, and the dispeller of sins.

Certainly, in addition to these virtues, 'The Ramayana' is a font of creative ideas. For those of us who get bogged down in Western approaches and answers it is an opportunity to see how other cultures have come to deal with questions that are common to all. As such it is a lesson in the ingeniousness of the human mind and the great commonalties of the human spirit. The difference in context and the epic scale can be a source of inspiration as well as outstanding entertainment.

This edition was created by Krishna Dharma, a Vaishnava priest and well-known translator of Sanskrit writings, is not so much a word for word translation as it is a detailed retelling. As such its style and rhythm is better adapted to Western tastes than stricter, more academic fare. On the other hand, Krishna Dharma leaves little out, and truly captures the feeling of the original. As such this is a massive accomplishment. The inclusion of various illustrations, both black and white and color enhance its value and impressiveness. Previous to buying this copy my exposure to the legend has been via excerpts, descriptions, and reenactments. These were adequate to their purpose, but reading the story in its proper sequence has added much to my experience.
